Bed Fall, Diaper Rash, Boo-Boo's, Spider-Killing, Spanking Himself & Food Bribery

22 Months & 1 Week

Last Friday we had a near catastrophe.  Tyson fell off our bed.  He has been upping the ante from crawling across our bed to wanting to walk across it.  I have been able to thwart him every time until that day.  I was getting dressed when Ty climbed up onto the bed.  Then he stood right up.  I told him, “No!” and tried to reach him, but he just considered this a game of chase and started to run across the bed!  Well, he got too close to the edge and fell right off.  Thank goodness he landed on a few decorative pillows and right on his back – so no further injuries to his arms/shoulders/clavicles.  He barely cried and was up running around immediately.  But my heart had stopped.  It was one of the scariest moments for me.  Thank you Jesus that he is OK!  After that incident, we had a morning full of errands.  We went to the grocery store and Valvoline.  We were at Valvoline for an hour or so since the Accord needed an oil change, tire rotation, and state inspection.  Unfortunately it failed inspection – no shocker since it is 10 years old - but Heath has to just fix the exhaust and then it will pass!  Shannon & Fin came over to hang in the afternoon and then we had dinner with them that night.  Shannon was doing the “single mother thing” since Sean was camping with his brother for the weekend in NY.  One funny thing that happened was while we were cooking supper.  I didn’t think that Ty had tried raw peppers before, so I gave him a small piece to try.  In true Ty fashion, he didn’t even try it and walked right to the trashcan and put it in!  He made his Daddy proud, since Heath hates peppers.  Ty is absolutely obsessed with putting anything and everything in the trash.  We have to be on alert at all times!  On Friday Ty had about 4 big episodes of diarrhea, so I warned Heath to be diligent about the diaper changes.  I don’t know what it is, but whenever he has been on an antibiotic and gets diarrhea… the poop doesn’t smell.  At all.  So weird.

It's hard to see, but he crunched up about 6 perfectly good paper cups & threw them away!

On Sabbath I worked and Heath & Ty went to Sabbath School in Laconia and then headed to the Edwards for lunch.  Heath, Adam & Keith went 4 wheeling in the afternoon and Sonia spent time with Ty.  They were very diligent with his diaper changes, but he still had a bad diaper rash when he got home.  He was not acting himself at all and wouldn’t go to sleep in his crib by himself (very unlike him), so Heath & I laid down with him until he fell asleep.  Poor guy.

On Sunday I worked again and Heath & Ty had a relaxing day at home.  Ty really relaxed and took a 3 ½ hour nap!  Oh my word!  He really wasn’t feeling himself at all.  A couple of incidents happened while I was gone.  I came home to find Heath & Ty reading bedtime stories on our bed.  Heath said, “Ty, tell Mama what happened.”  It was so cute, Ty went, “Oh…” and pointed to his scraped right knee.  He had tripped over a rake and fell in the driveway.  Then Heath said, “Tell Mama about the dogs.”  Of course, he really didn’t launch into the details, but Heath did.  Heath had walked in the family room and Reeses was screeching.  Ty was pinching her, grabbing handfuls of her skin.  My poor little sweet dog, who wouldn’t hurt a fly and will never hurt Ty no matter what he does (Snickers is another story) was in agony.  Heath said that Ty got quite a spanking for that altercation!  I did really well at the pharmacies on the way home.  I made $2 on an Icy-Hot type of cream, got a free natural sleep aid, a free jar of restless leg cream, and got 5 bottles of Dove shampoo/conditioner for $0.80 each!  Another great deal was at CVS.  I got two 12 packs of Bounty paper towels (usually $14.99) for $3.74 each!  Amazing.

Ty showing me another boo-boo (barely a scratch and yes, that's lipstick all over his face)

On Monday, we picked up after the weekend and then had a day at home.  We were picking up in our bedroom, when Ty got his hands on this electric razor and started to bang it against the radiator.  Then he decided to hit it against the wall pretty hard.  I got there and took it away, and then showed him that he had made a ding on the wall.  I told him that he had done that and that we were going to have to show Daddy when he got home.  He was completely solemn and then kept pointing at the gouge and saying, “Uh oh.  Uh oh.”  He started to become obsessed with it, like the scratch on the kitchen floor!  He took a 2 hour and 45 minute nap in the AM/early afternoon, not quite the 3 ½ hours, but quite a long time for him!  Shannon & Fin came over in the afternoon and Shannon can be my witness for this one.  Tyson was carrying around his maraca, when he saw a spider on the kitchen floor.  For whatever reason, he went right over to it and started to hit it with the maraca.  Well, he didn’t stop with a few hits – he went crazy and pulverized the thing, until there was just pieces of it everywhere.  I had to say, “Tyson, you got him!  Stop!  You got him!”  Now please, this is my first child, but I just don’t think that this is normal.  I know that Heath has stepped on and killed ants & spiders in front of Ty, so I’m sure that is where he has learned this, but… this is just a bit disturbing.  If I can find a positive point, I have to say that I was impressed with his hand-eye coordination, since the spider was pretty small.

The spider-killing episode

On Tuesday a couple of funny of things happened in the morning.  I had brought Ty downstairs to the kitchen when he woke up to have breakfast.  I had forgotten to take out his binky.  We leave it in the crib, so he just has it for sleeping.  Anyways, I said, “Tyson, you don’t need a binky!”  To that, he took it right out of his mouth and threw it on top of the stove!  It was so cute.  It’s like he was saying, “You are right, Mom!”  I know I’ve got to take it away at some point, I just don’t feel ready for that.  When he is absolutely inconsolable, it helps so much!!!!  What will you do at that point when there isn’t a binky?  I have to admit that the thought is a bit terrifying.  Another thing that was funny was Tyson was trying to get into this side cabinet in the kitchen.  We have child locks on it, but it is a lazy-susan type of corner cabinet and the locks don’t work that well on it.  Ty has now figured out (unfortunately) that if you pull it fast & furious, it will open.  So I had told him twice not to go near there… and he did again.  I gave him a spanking and told him if he went there again, that I would give him another spanking.  Well, about 5 minutes later, there he was trying to get into the cabinet again.  I said, “Tyson.  What did Mama say?”  To that, he proceeded to stick his bum out and patted his hand against his bum!!!!  Well, I just about died laughing.  I couldn’t help it.  How are you supposed to keep a straight face with that?  In the late morning, I headed over to Shannon’s apartment to meet her & my mom.  We were going to drive up near Lebanon to look at property that Shannon & Sean are interested in.  We were going to all drive in Shannon’s car.  When we got there, I was getting Ty out of the car seat and he wanted to hold the keys.  I gave them to him and he started to press all the buttons.  Shannon needed to get by my door, so I took Ty out and handed him to my mom, and then closed my door (not all the way) so Shannon could get by.  I had closed it just enough that it had latched and my heart stopped.  I said to my mom, “Tell me Tyson still has the keys.  Please.”  But he didn’t and the keys were now locked in the car.  I don’t have AAA or anything, but thank goodness I remembered that we have a spare key at home.  So my mom drove to our house, used her house key, and grabbed our spare key to open the door!  Talk about a delay in our start.  We had picked this time so that Ty would take his nap in the car.  Of course he didn’t sleep a wink on the way there.  The property is nice, but I’m not sure it is going to work out for various reasons.  We drove around Lebanon for awhile (got a little lost in Hanover), had lunch at Taco Bell and then went home.  Ty did finally sleep for awhile on the way home, but was so overdue for his nap it was crazy.
They love their Noni

On Wednesday I worked and then was so excited to have another ultrasound with my friend since we were both back from our vacations!  She was really busy, but was able to tell quickly that we are definitely having a boy!  No question on that!  But then she said, “Alison, I’m worried about your fluid levels again.”  Even I could see that there was not any fluid around his head or his chest.  We could only find fluid by his legs.  She said that I was at 5 cm.  With Tyson, I got put on bed rest at 5 cm, then I dropped to 4 cm in 3 days and then I had a C-Section the next day.  Let’s just say I was freaking out a little.  Because I was only 3 weeks early with Ty – I am 3 MONTHS early with this no-named little one.  So I went home, prayed, and tried to relax (yeah right).

First thing Thursday AM, I called Dr. O’Connor.  She called me back personally.  She told me to try not to worry.  Amniotic fluid levels are so variable with each ultrasound scan that you do.  She said that I was probably a little dehydrated coming off of a 12 hour shift, and we could have done the ultrasound right before the little guy was going to pee, etc. etc.  She wanted to make sure I wasn’t working over the weekend (which I wasn’t), to try to be a “princess”, focus on drinking a lot of fluids, to soak in a tub for an hour a day, and then have another ultrasound on Monday.  She is so calm that she makes me calm too.  Well, almost.  So at least we had a plan!  Tune in next week to find out the results! (=  One thing I have to mention that we had in full force last Thursday was our food bribery!!!!  It sounds terrible, but I assure you, it is for Ty's own good.  Heath really came up with this and we had done it a few times, but we are doing it all the time now.  Tyson’s eating habits have been terrible, as I have mentioned many times in this blog.  He won’t even try most foods and will live on PB&J, grilled cheese, pizza & fruit.  Well, what we are doing now seems to be working.  I will have something that he likes a lot (like fruit, bread, crackers… etc) and I will give him a bite of those items AS LONG as he takes a bite of whatever we are trying to feed him (casserole, vegetable etc).  It has been working like a charm!  I can’t believe it.  I thought that he would just spit out the stuff he doesn’t like, but he has been eating it – just to get to his “treats!”  I am SO SO excited about this.  He is finally eating a more balanced diet again!  The definite downside of this, is that I have to sit there and feed him bite-by-bite food.  Of course he has been very independent with his eating for awhile, so this part definitely stinks, but it is totally worth it!  I tried to let him take a bite of vegetable soup (to be able to have a strawberry), but he put the spoon in and got the smallest amount of broth (only) possible and acted like he deserved the strawberry!!!!  It was funny, but I could see that it was not going to work.  Well, we went out to the OG last Thursday night with Mom, Dad, Sonia & Adam.  We also hit up Burlington Coat Factory and Babies ‘R’ Us looking at double strollers and baby monitors (we are going to get a new one since we need a second camera anyway and I kind of broke our current camera).  We mostly did research and didn’t pull the trigger yet.  But we are close!

Have a great week!  Here are a few more random shots!

Ty put my glasses on!  Doesn't he look like the kid from Jerry Maguire?

If you look really closely, Ty was looking at US Magazine and he pointed right to a pregnant Vanessa Lachey's belly!

He can climb onto the chair without any problems... but he decided to step on his 4 wheeler and then onto 2 chair cushions to make it interesting, I guess!

Camping, German Shepherd Love, Nova Scotia 2012, Ladder+Bed Jumping, Purses, 2nd Ear Infection

21 Months & 2, 3 Weeks /  22 Months

So as promised... here I am after about 3-4 weeks.  No day-by-day recaps here... but just an overall summary.

The weekend before we left for Nova Scotia (the last weekend of July) we went camping with the Edwards in Freeport, Maine.  We tried a new campground and it was really nice.  It was right on the ocean and it had a farm, so we could go and look at all the animals (all of which Ty was scared of).  They accepted dogs, which is a must... so we had a good time.  Ty did great and slept pretty well.  We shared the Edwards ginormous tent with Keith & Sonia (Adam slept in his own) and was even able to set up Ty's pack ‘n’ play.  The dogs didn't bark as much as I thought they would, so that was good.  Ty just wouldn't take a nap on Sabbath afternoon in the tent, so Heath & I drove him around, which did the trick immediately.  There was threat of rain all weekend, but despite a little rain on Saturday night, it really didn't start until Sunday afternoon after we had packed up and left.  Thank goodness it was cool enough with the rain, so we did a bit of shopping and we were able to leave the dogs in the car... giving them many breaks of course.  We went out to eat at my favorite, the Macaroni Grill, and then headed home.  It was a nice weekend.

The week before we left for Nova Scotia was pretty busy.  Ty & I met up with my friend, Ann Marie, who had rented a house on Winnipesaukee for the week.  We went and swam and hung out.  Ty didn't love the water, since there wasn't a beach or anything, just a dock... but he DID love Ann Marie's dog, Bruno.  I was scared about this, because Ty has been pretty scared of any dogs but our own.  Bruno is a huge German Shepherd and I have no idea why this would be... but immediately Ty loved him.  I would think of any type of dog to be scared of - this would be the dog... but he just giggled and smiled at him non-stop.  I tried desperately to get a picture of them together, but it never did come out well.  So we had a good time at the lake with Ann Marie and Elizabeth (another friend from CMC).  The rest of the week... I worked on Wednesday and Noni watched Ty.  On Thursday, my parents and grandparents left for Nova Scotia and Ty, Sonia & I had a day in Manchester.  We went to Lots for Tots, since I was looking for some maternity pants and they have a great selection.  Ty has so many clothes right now, I didn't even look for him.  We went to Taco Bell for lunch and then to my OB appointment.  I had gained 9 pounds since my last appointment (almost 2 months ago, I hardly have any appointments since I am low risk).  So that was good.  His heartbeat was 140's and I am measuring well.  My blood pressure is still 90/50, so no trouble there.  Everything was good.  Sonia got to hear the heartbeat for the first time, so that was fun for her.  We went to Goodwill and then met up with Heath & Adam at the OG for supper.

This is what Ty did while I was packing for Nova Scotia (filled our laundry basket with an entire drawer full of stuff)

And then he got into our laundry hamper!

We left for Nova Scotia at 3:45 AM on Friday night/Saturday AM and headed out!  We had a really good trip actually.  Ty slept until nearly 8 AM and then took another 2 hour nap, so he slept half the trip!  The dogs did well too.  We arrived at 4:30 PM (5:30 PM Canada time) and only had stopped twice.  We had listened to some great audio books and that passes the time like nothing.

We had really good weather overall this year, thank goodness.  Nothing like the continuous rain last year.  We did have 2-3 days of rain, but it was overall pretty hot and humid.  Usually we freeze at night in our cabins and have to use a little heater that we leave up there, but we ran the fan most nights.  We swam a lot and that was fun.  The lake was the warmest I can ever remember.  It was truly like bath water.  The lake is hard with little ones, though... since we don't really have a beach and we swim out to the raft. But Ty finally figured out that he loved to hang out on the raft ladder and jump into our arms!  He couldn’t get enough of that!  He would even jump off the raft right into Heath’s arms – with no fear whatsoever.  He would just leap!  Not that Ty does not have fear.  He can be afraid of the smallest things!  Some of the kids were playing with this giant beach ball that you hook up to a hose and it sprays a little water so the kids can run through it.  Ty was scared to death of it and would run into my arms if he got the slightest bit wet from it.  It was so funny, though.  As soon as they turned it off and the water was no longer spraying, he walked right over to the ball and turned it over and examined every inch of it… trying to figure out how it worked!  He’s totally going to be an engineer.

Great weather for the lake!

Bode had just driven up from the lake!

I’m trying to think of some crazy things that Ty did while we were there.  First of all, Ty was in shoe heaven.  He loves trying on everyone’s shoes.  But Aubree’s shoes were his favorite.  They are just about 1-2 sizes bigger than his and he would put them on every chance he would get.  His favorites were her pink crocs and her green frog galoshes!  He also liked to carry around one of the girl’s pink purses.  Now should I be worried at this point?

Ty with the purse

Every morning, Tyson started doing this.  He would climb up on the headboard of our bed (it’s not high), straddle it and then “freefall” back onto the bed.  Oh, he loved this so much!  He would just giggle and giggle every time he would do it.  Towards the end, he upped the ante and stood up and freefell onto the bed!  But I stopped that right away.

Chillin' with Dad after a freefall

One thing that was very apparent to people who know Ty well is that Ty shuts down when he is in a big crowd.  He is very quiet and very shy.  Not like “Home Ty” at all.  When Ty is home, in his own element… he is a completely different kid.  I can’t tell you how many times Shannon remarked to me of how quiet Ty was.  He never fully opened up either… but what do you expect with 40 people around?   One true downside of having 40+ people together is that someone is bound to be sick.  Well, a few people came up with colds and before you knew it… it had spread to everyone like wildfire!  Poor Ty got it pretty bad and he has been sick for almost 2 weeks now.  After a night of screaming in horrible pain (I had never seen him so uncomfortable), I took him to a clinic because he was digging at his ears.  It was interesting, I went to the urgent care clinic first but they told me that I would have to go to the local doctor’s office in town.  You wouldn’t think that you could waltz into any doctor’s office, but that is how they do things.  The clinic is for labs, Xrays only.   It only cost us $30, which I was surprised at.  The doctor saw Ty and said that both his ears and throat were red and inflamed, but there was not any pus, so she would not advise him to get antibiotics.  But they wanted to see him back on Monday (this was a Friday).  His fever broke and he was a new guy by the time Monday came around, so I cancelled the appointment.  But we came home on Tuesday and by Wednesday the fever was back and he was digging at his ears again.  I took him to our pediatrician and what do you know?  Both of his ears are infected and he is on an antibiotic.  Finley also came back to have a double ear infection too and is on antibiotics as well.  Our poor little ones.

You can tell he does not feel well

Holding Dad's hand during the drive home

Since we came back, we are back to business as usual!  On Thursday we hung out with Shannon & Fin and went out to eat with the Frosts to Thai food.  We have to get our fill of the Frosts, because they are moving 40 minutes away at the end of the month.  )=   Sad for us, but great for them.  They are renting a 3 bedroom house, which will seem like the Taj Mahal compared to the 1 bedroom apartment that they are in now.  But we will miss them!

OK, enough rambling for now.  I’m sure I am missing a million things, but you remember what you can!  Have a good week.
