Maple Sugaring, Older Women, Spanking From Grammy, First Clock, Couch Fall, Folding Hands For Prayer, Dresser Accident, Bouncy House Party, Understands Poop, First Solo Cone & First Spaghetti

Wes:  1 Year, 4 Months & 2-3 Weeks Old

Ty:  3 Years, 5 Months & 2-3 Weeks Old

A month behind again…I had 2 big projects due for my class (including a PowerPoint presentation with audio that I had never done before), so I just couldn’t get a blog out.  I’m going to really try to get caught up now!

March 28- April 4
-  Friday March 28, Ty’s first day of being in his big boy bed/no binky and I was sure that he wouldn’t nap and just run around his room…but I was pleasantly surprised when he went to sleep after about 15 minutes (fluke).  His second night without his binky in his new big boy bed took 1 ½ hours to fall asleep.  Yikes.

-  Sabbath we headed up to Conway church & the Edwards’ house for maple sugaring.  We had potluck at church and the boys were really cute with their friends, the Blakeneys.  The Blakeneys have 3 girls (ages 7, 3, and 1).  It was very cute to me how both boys seem to be sweet on the older girls.  Ty ran and chased around the 7 year old and Westin followed around the 3 year old (who hugs and kisses him nonstop).  It was adorable.  Then they were playing a game where Ty was “in jail” and the 7 year old was the guard, making sure that he didn’t escape…(Ty would try to escape and then wrestling would ensue) and Westin was Ty’s son that Ty was trying to rescue.  Crazy how they can come up with this stuff.  We went to visit Norma after church and then spent the night at the Edwards.

-  Sunday we were supposed to do maple sugaring, but it was pouring hard all day.  So we went to Portland instead.  Went to IHOP, Goodwill (for the girls while the guys went to Harbor Freight) and then we all went to Mardens.  Something funny happened with Westin.  Ty had gone to Harbor Freight & Wes had stayed with me at Goodwill.  We picked up Ty from Harbor Freight (since we had the car seat) and Ty seemed very excited to see Wes.  So I said, “Wes, did you miss Ty?”  Right on cue, he said, “No!”  We got a good laugh at that.  We got back in the late afternoon to the Edwards and it had stopped raining and there was a ton of sap in the buckets, so they started boiling.  Fast forward to a few hours later…we didn’t get home until after 10 PM.  But before we got home, Sonia had given the boys a bath and during the bath…Ty had gotten mad at Westin because of taking a toy that Ty wanted etc.. and Ty had pushed Westin down and Wes had gone under the water.  Sonia instinctively spanked Ty (I have always told her that she is allowed to spank him if he is out of line) and Ty was absolutely devastated (she was too).  First spanking from Grammy.  He definitely deserved it.

Reading stories waiting for Daddy to finish with the sap...getting over the spanking from Grammy!

-  Monday was laundry day and playing at home.  When Heath got home that night, he used the turkey fryer on the porch to boil the last bit of the sap from the Edwards’ house and we got maple syrup!  3 ½ pints!  It was a beautiful sight!  The boys loved to watch him…it was a long process and I had to put them to bed before it was over…but Heath was so excited that he woke up Ty to taste the syrup (since Ty had helped collect the sap)!  That goodness Ty went back to sleep, despite the sugar!

Getting started...

The boys watching Heath work... Westin "Yes, is this the news station?  Get a crew over here!  My dad is making maple syrup!"

Success!

After waking up, eyeing the syrup

Loving the taste

-  Tuesday I worked, but Shannon & kids came for a quick visit in the morning before I left.  Westin and Griffin just love each other and Westin is constantly laying on him or trying to sit on him, which is his equivalent of a hug!  Ty figured out how to go to sleep at night without his binky and he is going right to sleep now – which is great!  It did take a few days though!

A "Westin hug"

-  Wednesday was my chill day after work, but we had to get out of our PJ’s since we were going out to eat on Wednesday instead of Thursday this week.  We went to the Mexican restaurant with my parents & Adam.  Adam played a few games with the boys while we were waiting for Heath to get home.  Wednesday night we introduced Adam to Monopoly Deal, which we had bought, after playing at the Cape with the Conrads, Cases & Walls.  Adam & Heath are both hooked, so we have been playing a couple of hands after going out to eat for a few weeks now.  Love it!

-  Thursday was Grocery Day…and playing some more at home.  Wes did something that was so cute.  I had taken all the dog’s blankets/dog bed and put them in the washing machine.  Well, Westin was so concerned.  He saw me take the blankets and put them in…and he kept touching the washing machine door saying, “Puppies.  Puppies.”  He thought they were being washed too!  When I unloaded it when the wash was done, he came right over again saying, “Puppies” and still expected them to come out of the washing machine.  It was really cute.

Sword fighting with yard sticks!

-  Friday was a big day for Tyson.  He got his first clock on this day!  It had been a bit of a problem in the mornings, Ty sleeping in his big boy bed.  Whenever he would stir first thing in the AM in his crib, he would just roll over and go back to sleep.  Well, whenever he would first stir now in his bed, he would just get up…thinking it was time to get up.  Well, the kid goes to sleep between 8:30-9:00 PM and usually will get up at 8 AM.  But since getting into the big bed, he had been coming downstairs at 6:45 AM.  He was losing at least an hour of sleep and that was not good (for anyone)!!!!  We bit the bullet and bought this “OK to Wake” alarm clock from Amazon.  I set it for 7:55 AM and the little creature glows green when he is allowed to get up!  He absolutely loves it – he talks about it all the time and shows it off to everyone that comes to the house!  It has been working like a charm, so it was worth the $30.

APRIL 5 – 11
-  Sabbath we were supposed to be back at the Edwards to do maple sugaring, but Sonia got the flu, so we stayed away.  Instead I went to an Indonesian SDA church in Dover for my school project, while Heath stayed at home with the boys.  I had learned about “Indonesian time,” in which everything happens in a relaxed, laid-back way without any concern about actual clock time.  When I arrived at 11:15 AM (when church was supposed to start according to their website), opening prayer was being said and I thought I was there at the perfect time…but they were starting Sabbath School!!!!  Needless to say, church did not finish until 2 PM!!!!!  Oh, and as soon I got to the church, the pastor’s wife asked me if I would tell a children’s story.  I did, but I hate public speaking…but it went OK.  It was great to learn about the culture – it was fun.  After I got home, we were going to go to a park, but it turned very cold & windy – so we stayed home.  Wes had been messing around on the couches and ended up falling off the couch.  He wasn’t hurt, but scared.  I hoped that it would deter him from getting back up on the couches, but not so much.  After sundown, we got some take-out and called it a day.

Not just the couches - standing in the kitchen sink!

-  On Sunday, Heath braved the flu and went to the Edwards.  He stayed outside boiling the sap all day and did not go inside the infected house.  The boys & I stayed home and went to the pharmacies.  A cute thing was that Westin started folding his hands during prayer!  Sunday afternoon my parents came over to watch “Frozen” with the boys & me and we had supper.  We had all heard how good it was…we didn’t realize that one of the characters has magical powers…but just about every kid’s movie has some type of magic involved, so once you get over that…the movie was really cute and the music was fantastic.  Ty absolutely loved it and it actually held Westin’s interest for most of the movie.

Ty made a "picnic"

-  Monday started my week’s project of cleaning out my clothes closet.  What an accomplishment!  And I brought 5 garbage bags of clothes to Goodwill!  God saved my boys that day.  They were running between playing in Ty and Westin’s room (I was in the closet in Westin’s room) when I heard the biggest crash ever.  Westin was in the closet with me and I flew out the closet…not sure what I was going to find.  Tyson was trying to reach a ball that had fallen behind his dresser, and he pushed on the dresser trying to reach the ball – and the dresser fell over!!!  Thank goodness Westin was with me, because he had been playing with Ty in Ty’s room and the dresser could have killed him.  Heath has now fixed it to the wall so that won’t happen again.  It was so scary and Ty was scared too.

Dresser fallen over - 2 drawers got busted

This is what they were doing while I was in the closet...took the mattress off the bed, stacking toys on it, playing with the step ladder... crazy stuff.

-  Tuesday I worked and Ty wouldn’t nap for Noni.  He didn’t nap for me the day before either.  I didn’t like the way this was going.

-  Wednesday, the day after I worked, I had to get out of my PJ’s again.  The boys had a birthday party.  Zach Harlow, a friend from Laconia Sabbath School, was turning 4.  They had a Super Heroes birthday party at a bouncy house center.  They have like 5 big bouncy houses & slides.  The kids had an absolute blast – Westin & Ty were crazy kids all over that place.  It was so fun.

Climbing up one of the slides at the party

Yes, he was kissing Spiderman!

-  On Thursday Westin had a breakthrough and said, “poop poo” and patted his bum as he was pooping!  I know what is going to happen.  I am bound and determined to not potty-train Westin until he is 3 and here he is…going to start showing interest way earlier.  Not going to happen!  In the afternoon, we went to Concord and met Shannon & the kids, and my parents at a playground.  The kids had a blast.  Then my mom, kids & I went to Goodwill.  Then we met up with Heath & my dad at the OG.

Griffin - getting so old!

At Goodwill

He got tired!

-  On Friday, we stayed at home.  Westin is really becoming a big boy!  He had fallen or something and was crying and then he pulled up his shirt and said, “boo-boo” and showed me a red spot on his belly!  I love it how he can communicate so well now!  In the late afternoon, we met Heath at DQ (Westin got his first solo ice-cream cone), then met the guy that does our taxes to sign our papers, and then ran to Market Basket before the sun set.  Then the best thing happened during supper that night.  Westin ate spaghetti for the first time!  Yea!

First solo ice-cream cone!

Have a great week!

Cape Weekend, AUC Concert, "Puppies" Obsession, "GPS," New Nap Schedule, "No, No, No," New Car Seat, Bye-Bye Binky & Big Boy Bed

Wes:  1 Year, 4 Months & 1 Week Old
Ty:  3 Years, 5 Months & 1 Week Old

WEEK OF MARCH 17-21

-  Before that week, we went to the Cape for the weekend of March 15+16.  We went down for church and surprised almost everyone.  They had been expecting just Wes & I because we thought Ty & Heath were going to be maple sugaring, but the sap really wasn’t running yet, so they came!  Westin didn’t sleep the entire 2 ½ hour drive to the Cape, which was ridiculous.  We hung in the mother’s room during much of church with Kelly & Caleb and Shannon & Griffin.  We got to see Caleb walking in person and that was exciting!  We went to the Kelly & Steve’s for lunch with the Frosts, Rad & Jen, Dave & Yully and  a friend of theirs.  They all went walking on the beach (with Aunt Lori & Uncle Charlie) but Kelly stayed behind with me, while I let Wes sleep.  Saturday night we had yummy veggieburgers, made by Aunt Lori, and they introduced me to a game called Monopoly Deal – which I immediately got hooked on.  Heath had gone to bed with the boys, he was tired & it is always tough the first night anywhere to get the boys to sleep…so having Heath there helped them.

Westin loved Kelly immediately and wanted her to hold him all the time!

A lot of these pics are blurry - thanks iPhone, but I have to post them!

"Ooo!  Look at all the new toys!"

Playing together

-  Sunday was a fun day!  Heath, Steve, Sean & Rad left early in the AM and went to play frisbee golf.  There was a near catastrophe when Sean hit Heath in the head with the frisbee (a different type of frisbee, very heavy & weighted)!  Rad & Steve both thought that Sean had hit a tree because the sound was so loud!  Heath definitely had a sore head the rest of the day – thank goodness he was OK!  When they got back we brought the kids to a playground, treated them to penny candy at the Craigsville General Store, and then went to lunch at a Thai restaurant.  Then the guys took the kids home and the ladies went to this huge kids thrift store sale.  The Cape ladies were disappointed because it was so much smaller than their fall sale had been, but I still got plenty of good stuff, so I was happy.  After that we went back to Kelly & Steve’s, packed up and headed home.  Well, first there was a stop at Harbor Freight’s for Heath (Steve & Caleb went too) and then we stopped at David & Yully’s gorgeous home on the way home.  We met the Frosts there too and David & Yully had a bunch of food set out for us!  So sweet!  We got home at about 9:00 PM or so…tired but had a great weekend!

Candyaholic like me!

-  Monday was St. Patty’s Day and I had stupidly signed myself up to work.  Who does that in the ER?  We had plenty of drunks and it was a busy night.

-  Tuesday we were supposed to go see my cousin, Jonathan’s choir sing in Vermont (he is the music director at Southwestern University and they were on tour up here)… but I was so exhausted from the night before, I just couldn’t do it.  We stayed in our PJ's all day.

-  Just a little tid bit, I don’t know if I have mentioned Westin’s obsession with the puppies and just the word “puppies” in general.  He is unbelievable!  He will literally wake up in the AM and the first words out of his mouth are “puppies!”  So funny.

-  Wednesday I was feeling so rested (after my 5 hours of sleep) and I felt so bad that we hadn’t gone to the concert that I came up with an impromptu plan to go with my parents to see the choir at AUC that evening.  So we all headed out.  We first stopped at the ABC in South Lancaster and stocked up on veggie meat and met up with Aunt Melanie & Rad.  Then we went for supper at the famous “John’s Pizza,” where you can get items with veggie meat.  Most of us opted for prosage subs and they were delightful.  I had put a bit of pineapple soda in one of our straw sippie cups for Ty and I don’t know what happened, but it must have gotten pressurized with the carbonation…but it started spraying everywhere and everyone got a nice, sticky, pineapple bath!    After supper we went over to the church and met up with Jonathan, Aunt Sherrie, and Uncle Kevin.  The concert was amazing – the choir is super talented…as is my cousin, the director!  We almost made it to the end, but the boys were starting to melt down and make too much noise (even in the Mother’s Room) so we had to leave.  Wish John lived closer!

Great concert!

-  Thursday was grocery day, Mexican restaurant (with just the 4 of us), and Tyson used a word that I had no idea he knew!  We were in the car and he asked me to “move the GPS, Mama.”  I had no clue he knew that it was a “GPS!”  They can shock you sometimes with the things they know!

-  Friday…I can not remember a thing that happened.

-  Sabbath I worked 7a-7p and there was the most spectacular sunrise that I took a picture of when I was parking my car in the parking garage.  I am not a morning person, but this was just beautiful.  The boys stayed home...I had forgotten to mention that Heath & I both got colds, but thank goodness the boys didn’t get it!

-  Sunday I worked 3p-3a and the boys went to the Edwards’ house for sugaring…the sap still was not running (too darn cold) but they were putting more taps in the trees and getting ready!

WEEK OF MARCH 24-28

-  Monday started a new nap schedule for us that I am very excited about!  Since Westin has lengthened his 1st nap and has dropped his 2nd one… I decided to try to get him to sleep later in the day (instead of 11 AM).  Because when he sleeps 3 ½ hours, then it puts the boys’ lunch time at about 2:30 PM -3:00ish and then they are not very hungry to eat supper at 6:45-7:00 PM.  This way, I have them eat lunch at about 1:00ish and then they are napping 2:00ish-whenever.  There are many positives for this.  One of them is that I have BOTH boys sleeping together and on the 1st day of the nap trial…Ty slept for 3 hours and Wes slept for 3 ½!!!  It was amazing!  Another positive is that Ty is SO much better natured if he wakes himself up instead of me doing it (because I would wake him up at 5:45 PM so he would go to sleep at his bedtime).  Hopefully this works out for awhile!

-  Tuesday my hopes came crashing down when I worked and Ty would not sleep for Noni.  I chalked it up to Poppy being there too and Ty being too excited to sleep!

-  Wednesday Ty went right to sleep for me at 2:30 PM and slept 2 hours, which I proceeded to tease Noni about!  Something that is new with Wes is that he has learned the dreaded word of “no!”  I would have to look back, but I am sure this is WAY before Ty ever said it.  The only positive is that he says it in a really adorable way.  Instead of yelling, “no!”, he does his nose crinkling thing and says (in a singsong voice), “no, no, no!”  I hope this cute way of saying “no” will continue for awhile!  We went out to eat in Concord to the OG with Adam on this night since Heath got out of work early.  Westin officially got his new car seat (which we bought off my mother) on this night and he was excited!

-  Thursday was a big, big day for Tyson.  First, just a funny thing that Ty did while we were at the grocery store…I was shopping with my list in my hand and Ty asked to see the list.  I handed it to him and he acted like he was really reading it and then announced… “Cookies…ice-cream…cupcake goldfish…corn…”  I laughed so hard, but at least he threw the corn in there for good nutrition!  On the way back from the grocery store, out of the blue, he announced to me that when Daddy came home, he was going to throw his binky in the trash because he wanted his big boy bed.  I was shocked!  And so excited!  I had let the matter of the binky drop for a couple of weeks and I guess that was the right thing to do!  Just as promised, when Heath got home Ty threw his favorite “Rock ‘n’ Roll” binky in the trash.  I was so surprised – he didn’t hesitate at all!  I was so proud of him – I don’t know if I can remember a moment that I have been more proud!  I think it is because this was completely his decision and he was willing to let something go that he loved so much to get a reward that he was excited about.  I cried.  Officially without the binky, he is a big boy now.  He was over the moon about his bed and, not surprisingly, it took him 2 hours to go to sleep that night.  Part of it was excitement and part of it was not having his binky.  Can you imagine if you have a ritual or something that you do to help you fall asleep at night (in my husband’s case it is falling asleep with the TV on)… and you have always done it for 3 ½ years and suddenly you don’t have it?  In a sense, you are having to learn to fall asleep in a different way.  To Ty’s credit (and again, more proudness) he never asked for his binky that night.  But I heard the funniest thing while I was putting Westin down in his crib.  I heard Ty talking in his room and he was half-crying, “Oh binky!  Ty loves you so much!  Ty threw you in the trash!”  I was quietly cracking up…my poor BIG boy!

Getting ready...
